The West Africa Tech Excellence Forum (WATEF) has announced the appointment of Mr. Babalola Ayodele, a seasoned communications and public affairs strategist, as one of the judges for the WATEF Hackathon 2025. His inclusion on this year’s judging panel reflects the Forum’s commitment to bridging technology with purposeful communication and governance-driven innovation.

Mr. Ayodele will bring his expertise to three key award categories: the Public Communication and Media Innovation Award, the Public Relations and Strategic Leadership Award, and the Governance, Policy, and Civic Engagement Award. With years of experience spanning journalism, media relations, and strategic advisory, Mr. Ayodele has consistently demonstrated how effective communication can serve as a tool for national development. Currently serving as Strategic Technical Adviser to the Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), he oversees the Commission’s public communication strategy, stakeholder engagement, and reputation management. Under his guidance, NIMC’s public outreach initiatives have seen remarkable improvement in visibility, transparency, and public engagement.

His work has involved developing comprehensive communication frameworks that helped the Commission manage high-profile reputational challenges while maintaining clarity, trust, and institutional credibility. Mr. Ayodele began his career in the media industry, working with Abuja Broadcasting Corporation (Aso Radio 93.5 FM) where he developed his voice as a journalist and sub-editor. He later served with Africa Independent Television (AIT) on Moneyline with Nancy, coordinating economic reports and ensuring journalistic accuracy in public finance and policy coverage. His early experiences laid a solid foundation in ethical journalism, editorial integrity, and content accuracy values that still guide his professional approach today.

He transitioned into strategic communication roles that blended storytelling with organizational leadership. At Phoenix Relations Limited, where he served as Director of Operations and Communications, he designed and executed public affairs strategies that strengthened corporate reputation, enhanced stakeholder collaboration, and improved operational communication structures. His ability to manage both message and mission set him apart as a leader who understands how media, institutions, and society converge.

Public Communication and Media Innovation Award

This award recognizes initiatives that leverage communication and digital storytelling to promote transparency and social awareness. Mr. Ayodele’s work at NIMC has exemplified these principles. He championed digital storytelling methods that simplified the Commission’s messages, enabling citizens to better understand identity registration processes and national data protection efforts. During his time with the Office of the Vice President of Nigeria, he was part of the social media team responsible for projecting the Vice President’s engagements and national programs. He also possesses certifications in Project Management, Human Resource Management, and Customer Relations Management, as well as professional memberships with the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) and the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ).

His recognition as an Honorary Doctorate Fellow in Human Resource Management by the College of Oil and Gas Exploration Technology, Nigeria, reflects the breadth of his leadership beyond communication into governance, capacity development, and institutional excellence.
